In the last decade, life science-based innovations have been incremental rather than radical. Onerous regulations that differ from country to country, high product development costs and a lack of venture capital investment have posed significant challenges to the industry. Yet most agree that the overall business model of the pharmaceutical industry is unsustainable. Fundamental, disruptive change is required and national healthcare systems will need to adapt in turn to reflect this new model.
The implementation of new trends from IT points towards a solution, as do alternative ways of funding R&D through the establishment of new public-private partnerships. With European markets moribund, frontier markets present significant growth opportunities for the industry, but accessing and tapping them is easier said than done.
In its 20th year, The Pharma Summit is established as the major industry event that brings together all major stakeholders - industry leaders, policy-makers, regulators, academics, scientists and patient representatives, innovators from IT and biotechnology as well as from frontier markets, to tackle the most pressing issues the industry is facing and to assess the power of a range of disruptive new business models.
The event in 2014 drew an audience of over 180 senior pharmaceutical executives from across the UK, Europe and beyond to debate the future of pharma.
